John Walker: Company Director Susan Walker: Company Director

Husband of co-director Susan, John Walker has done most things that can be done on a bike – commuting, touring, bike holidays, racing.

In cycle sport John competed in cycling events in Scotland for over 12 years including track, time trialling, road and off-road racing winning several Scottish Championship medals, mainly in mountain biking. He also competed in the Western Isles Challenge, an adventure race involving cycling, running, canoeing and swimming. Off the bike, John’s experience extends to event organisation, race management and cycle tuition, maintenance & repairs.

John’s commercial background lies in the area of economic development. On graduating from Aberdeen University with an MA Honours in Economic Science he went on to build a successful career in property development – in both the public and private sectors. In twelve years with Scottish Enterprise John lead a variety of major projects including the refurbishment of Kilmarnock Town Centre and the upgrading of Prestwick Airport. John was Project Manager on the £78m Millennium Link engineering project to restore the Forth & Clyde and Union Canals in central Scotland. He also headed the team responsible for attracting several prestige inward investors to the West of Scotland.

Susan rides bikes too – though somewhat more sedately than husband John – and has partnered him on their tandem tours of Scotland and beyond.

Susan has extensive experience in event organisation including management of the cycling events at the World Medical Games and World Island Games. For many years Susan and husband John coordinated the timing and results service which Walkers Cycling provided to the Scottish Cross Country Mountainbike Race Series.

Susan served on the Executive Committee of the Scottish Cyclists’ Union, including a period as National Track Racing Coordinator, and was Vice Chair on the British Cycling Board of Management, helping to steer the organisation to its current position as one of most successful governing bodies of sport in the UK.

In the office Susan is the company’s “computer whiz” possessing in-depth knowledge of a wide variety of software packages. Susan is also a skilled computer and network constructor and maintains the company’s IT network.

Neil Walker: Business Manager Anna Walker: Shop Manager

Neil can be credited with getting the rest of the family into cycling when he got an MTB back in the 1980s. He went on to win Scottish Championships on road, time trial, track and MTB, and several British Championship track medals. Neil represented Scotland on road and track at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur.

After graduating from Edinburgh University with an Honours Degree in Applied Sports Sciences, Neil worked for a year as a coach with the Scotland Team and private clients, before spending 5 years as a coach and manager with the Great Britain Cycling Team, including 2 years as National Cross Country MTB Coach. Neil then came back home to Ayrshire and spent 2 years managing the Scottish Cycling Performance Programme, helping to put in place the programme which delivered an unprecedented 6 medals in the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Australia.

Neil also offers professional training and skills coaching to cyclists at all levels from beginners to elite racers. See the Realworldcoaching website for more information.

Neil still enjoys competitive cycling when he gets the chance and has enjoyed a fair degree of success racing across several disciplines in Walkers Cycling Club colours!

Amongst her many talents and skills Anna is a qualified veterinary nurse – which comes in handy when the ‘grease monkeys’ in the workshop come off worst in an altercation with some of the sharper tools in the box.

Anna works part-time in the business and successfully combines her job as Shop Manager with her role as Mum to Finlay and Grace. She has also completed Cytech training allowing her to lend a hand in the workshop with repairs and servicing at busy periods

Anna is a regular competitor in cross country mountain bike races, the occasional duathlon and helps run Walkers Cycling Club.

With Anna’s wealth of expertise and knowledge in women’s cycling requirements, a growing number of our women customers have come to appreciate her advice when choosing women’s bikes, clothing and accessories. Indeed, Anna is our ‘clothing consultant’ and is largely responsible for the superb range of ladies, gents and children’s cycle clothing we carry
