Children's Bikes

Here at Walkers, in common with the most adults, we started cycling as children and we can remember the excitement of getting a new bike - perhaps as a birthday present or from Santa Claus. We want our younger customers to have as much fun cycling as we did when we were their age.

Our range of children's cycles is sourced from the same reputable companies who supply our adult cycles and includes bikes manufactured by Adams, Claud Butler, CUBE, Falcon, Giant and Zooom.

No DIY with Walkers Kids' Bikes!
All our children's bikes are sold fully built and ready to ride. Some retailers will happily take your cash and send you away with the bike in a box which you then have to assemble yourself. Not at Walkers!

Safety First
At Walkers we will never advise buying a bike that your child will "grow into" and will help you to choose a bike that they can ride safely now. Children should always wear a approved safety helmet when riding their bikes - no matter how short the journey - and we stock a range of safety helmets in fun designs and colours that appeal to youngsters.

Choosing a Child's Bike
We welcome children, accompanied by a parent or guardian, to view our range of children's cycles and try them for size. Our experienced staff can help you choose the right bike for your child.

Children's cycles are grouped by wheel size from 12 to 24 inches. Older children may be ready for a small framed adult bike with 26" wheels - most manufacturers have 13 or 14" framed adult bikes in their range. See the sizing chart further down this page for guidance on the correct size for your child.

You may find one of our Walkers Cycling bike buying guides useful. These can be downloaded from our Bikes Page.

Child Seats, Trailers and Tag-alongs
Younger children needn't miss out on the cycling experience. Whether you're just popping down to the shops or heading off a family outing, we can supply child seats and trailers that attach to an adult's bike so that junior can go to.

The tag-along - a single wheeled trailer bike that attaches to the adult's bike - is also a popular solution as the child gets to ride as well, under the adult's control.

Run-a-long Trainer Bikes

We stock Adventure Zooom run-a-long trainer bikes for children similar to the one pictured below.

These bikes are a fun alternative to a trike and may do away with the need for stabilisers when a child is learning to ride a bike.

They don't have pedals and help your child to develop basic balance and riding skills before moving on to their first 'real' pedal bike.

Our Service
Walkers Cycling take pride in the friendly, personal service we offer. The 'Walkers Cycling Price' of all new bikes sold by us is inclusive of VAT, full assembly, 21 point adjustment and safety check, free servicing and one or two money off vouchers which can be redeemed against any parts and accessories purchased when the bike comes in for its free service.* All our manufacturers offer a full warranty on all their products.

Stock Availability and Ordering
We aim to have a good selection of children's cycles in stock. To avoid disappointment please phone, fax or email to check availability before traveling. Models not in stock can usually be ordered for delivery within a few days - subject to availability from the manufacturer. We can take a deposit to reserve your new bike - £30 or 25%, whichever is the greater - ride your new bike away when the balance has been paid.

Trade-in Your Old Bike
We have teamed up with a local charity bike recycling project to offer a £15 trade-in voucher in exchange for your old bike when you purchase a new child's bicycle of wheel size 20" or above. The voucher gives you £15 to spend on parts and accessories on your new child's bike. See our Terms & Conditions page for full details.

Sizing a Child's Bike
There is no specific rule that dictates what size of bike is right for a child of any particular age. Frame sizes vary between different manufacturers and different styles of bike. The child's level of cycling skill and confidence will also affect the choice of size.

The table below provides a very approximate guide to suitable sizes for different age groups. At Walkers Cycling however, we believe there is simply no substitute for a child trying the bike for size. We welcome children accompanied by an adult in the shop where we will gladly adjust the handlebars and/or saddle of any cycle to help you determine the most appropriate size of bike for your child.
